The All iSchool Orientation is the Information School's official welcome event for all incoming Informatics, MLIS, MSIM and PhD students. The Orientation will take place from 1:30-2:30pm in Kane Hall 220, immediately followed by the Fair from 2:30-4:30pm in the Suzzallo Library Cafe, Room 101.

Research Funding - A Quick Guide for iSchool Students

This workshop will introduce students to the world of student research funding at the University of Washington's Information School. Upcoming graduate and undergraduate opportunities along with current areas of administrative support will be presented. Building Your Network Step by Step

Dozens of studies suggest that the most effective way to find employment opportunities is networking. Serious job-seekers take initiative to make themselves known by others who might have job leads, contacts, or advice. A common problem with networking is that many people are afraid of it or unsure how to go about it. In this workshop, we’ll show you how to build your network of professional contacts in a step by step manner using family, alumni, professional associations, and more.

Student Fiscal Services' invites you to join us to learn about tuition account billing and payment, Washington state residency, disbursement of financial aid (relevant for all i-school programs - whether they are managed through the UWEO or the SFS in Schmitz Hall), fellowships, TAs/RAs, student tax issues and the special concerns of international students. Also learn tips on 'budgeting while on a student budget'!

ALISS Brown Bag Information Session/Open Meeting

Bring your lunch and join ALISS for an information session during our first open meeting of the 2008-2009 academic year. Spend some time meeting the ALISS officers, members of your cohort and other students in the MLIS program here at the iSchool. We will introduce you to ALISS and talk about the year to come--hey you have to eat, why not do it with ALISS?

CIDR Seminar on Group Projects

Location: Mary Gates Hall, 420
Students in all of the iSchool’s programs work on group projects in various capacities during their program. There is much research and information available about how to be effective in working this way with classmates; it is a skill, and it can be learned! Better yet, it is a practice that will benefit you now as a student as well as in the future. Come begin the process. Facilitated by the Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR) staff.
Library Orientation

Location: Suzzallo Library Instruction Room
Residential MLIS and PhD Info Science students are invited to join University of Washington Librarian, Nancy Huling (Head of Reference and Research Services), for an introduction to the University Library system. The Orientation will include a tour of the Suzzallo/Allen Library and an informative overview of the library's resources including: eReserves, Research Databases, Electronic Journals and more. Overview of Tuition Exemption Program

Please attend this information session if you are a new MLIS student who intends to make use of the tuition exemption available to current state employees. Marie Potter, the academic advisor for the MLIS program, will present on how to register for LIS and other iSchool classes, policies or procedures you will need to know, and tips for successful completion of the MLIS program. Current MLIS students utilizing tuition exemption will also be there to answer your questions.

Are you interested in working in a K-12 public school library? For more information on how to obtain the School Library Media certificate program while completing your MLIS degree, please attend this session led by Marie Potter, academic advisor the MLIS program. Current MLIS students who are interested in working with youth will also be there to answer your questions.
iYouth Happy Hour/Dinner Outing

Location: Schultzy's on the Ave
Members of iYouth will be meeting for an informal happy hour/dinner outing (pay on your own) and would like to invite all those interested in youth librarianship to join them for a fun, casual, get together. Learn more about iYouth, mingle with current and new students, and enjoy a bite to eat at one of the most popular restaurants on the Ave. Meet outside of MGH 420 at 6:30 pm to walk over to the Ave together, or meet at Schultzy's around 6:45 pm.

Overview of iSchool IT Resources

Come learn about the various IT resources available to you as an iSchool student! Get an introduction of the computer lab, learn about the different network resources available to you, find out important information regarding licensing software, and discover cool communication technologies. For students in the MLIS and MSIM programs, this overview session covers much of the "Network Resources Workshop" (NRW) that is offered to your cohort, so if you missed the NRW session, you may attend this one. **Please contact your program advisor for instructions on how to sign up.
ALISS/SALA Mixer

Location: HUB Bowling Alley
Your first week at the iSchool is over, now it's time to relax, reflect, and bowl! Join fellow iSchool students at the iSchool mixer, sponsored by ALISS and SALA, at the HUB Bowling Alley from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday September 26th. We hope to see you there for bowling, beer, pizza, soda and fun!
IUGA LAN Party
Time: 6:00 PM - 3:00 AM
Location: Mary Gates Hall, 430 and 420
Come to the 4th floor of MGH on September 26th as IUGA kicks off the new school year with a LAN party. From 7pm-3am, the computers will be running Counter Srike, Starcraft, Team Fortress 2, Worms, Call of Duty 4, etc. We also hope to have Rock Band, Halo 3, and whatever else people bring. Please take a moment to pre-register before September 22nd by emailing iuga@u.washington.edu with your name and the number of people you'll bring. Everybody is welcome! As pizza and soda will be provided, the cost is $5 if you pre-register or $7 at the door.
